The Word of God is the foundation of everything in Christianity.
If the foundation of a building is weakened or destroyed, the building becomes unstable and may collapse.
The enemy is continually attacking the foundations of Christianity. The primary foundation is the Word of God – God’s revelation of Himself. Through God’s Word we know Him and His will. One of Satan’s strategies is to discredit, ignore or weaken God’s Word.
Biblical foundations are attacked by promoting false ideas, attitudes or philosophies, such as:
- The Bible is not the Word of the Living Creator and cannot be accepted as such
- The Bible is not authoritative
- The Bible cannot be interpreted literally
- The Bible is not sufficient for understanding the universe and life in it
As Christ-followers, we must be discerning. Discernment is the process of making careful distinctions in our thinking about truth – drawing a clear contrast between truth and error.
1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 gives us the requirements of a discerning mind:
- Examine everything
- Cling to what is good
- Shun what is evil
Discernment relative to God’s Word involves some basic understandings:
- What the Bible claims to be (the Word of God)
- How that claim must be accepted (by faith)
- How we must interpret Scripture (literally to discover the intended meaning of author)
- The authority of Scripture (if the above is true, Scripture has unquestionable authority)
- The implications and applications of this understanding in regard to:
Our universe – we have information from the Maker
Our worldview – filtering everything through the Word
