The Bible is God’s revelation of Himself to mankind and is therefore authoritative, true in every word and trustworthy. It follows then that the Bible is the “History Book of the Universe” and the narrative of Genesis 1-11 is real history.
The first eleven chapters of Genesis is the foundation for
Our understanding of the universe and life in it
Our understanding and application of the remainder of God’s Word
Answers in Genesis has a helpful outline of Biblical history called The Seven C’s. (http://www.answersingenesis.org/museum/docs/7cs.asp) The following discussion is based on this outline of Creation, Corruption, Catastrophe, Confusion, Christ, Cross and Consummation.
The first four “C’s” occur in Genesis 1-11 and help us understand our universe and life in it.
1. CREATION
God created the universe and everything in it in six days.
Day 1: The heavens, the earth, light and darkness.
Day 2: Heaven – space or atmosphere Genesis 1:6
Day 3: Dry land, the seas, and vegetation.
Day 4: The sun, the moon and the stars.
Day 5: Living creatures in the water, birds in the air.
Day 6: Land animals and people.
Day 7: God rested.
God’s creation was very good. There were no imperfections; no sin; no death. The Bible tells us that God created time, space and matter out of nothing. Evolution tells us that these evolved from nothing by chance. Both scientists that believe the Bible account of creation and those who subscribe to the theory of evolution have access to the same information and evidence. They simply interpret it differently and arrive at different conclusions.
What do we learn from CREATION?
The origin of space, time, and matter
Why we have a 7 day week
The origin of work – sanctioned by God before the Fall
Man’s responsibility of dominion or stewardship of the creation
The definition of marriage
God created humans in His own image and established the foundation for marriage by virtue of creation Genesis 2:24
Jesus acknowledged this as well Matthew 19:4-6
When God created dinosaurs (Day 6)
All animals and humans were originally vegetarians Genesis 1:29-30
2. CORRUPTION
Adam and Eve sinned and brought death upon themselves and creation. Death and sin were not a part of God’s original creation. On the other hand, evolution tells us that death has always been a part of the process – a survival of the fittest.
The Bible tells us that death is a result of sin. Therefore death had a beginning and it will have an end. 1 Corinthians 15:26
Death is a temporary intrusion – an enemy that brought disease, pain, suffering and emotional turmoil. However, death will not exist in the New Heaven and New Earth. Revelation 21:4
What do we learn from CORRUPTION?
Why we have death and suffering
Why work is harder and less satisfying
Why Jesus had to suffer and die on the cross
3. CATASTROPHE
Sin increased until God destroyed the entire world by flood, but God spared Noah and his family as an act of mercy and grace and commanded them to repopulate the earth.
What do we learn from CATASTROPHE?
The created universe was dramatically changed by the flood
The environment of earth became harsh, ice formed in some parts of earth
Storms, violent weather, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc. came into existence
4. CONFUSION
Sin was still evident after the flood and wickedness again increased rapidly until God confused the languages of the people and scattered them because of their rebellion.
What do we learn from CONFUSION?
Why we have different people groups
Why we have different languages
The last three “C’s” help us understand and apply the remainder of God’s Word based on the foundation of Genesis 1-11.
Romans 8:18-23
5. CHRIST
The first Adam was created sinless, immortal and was to be God’s representative and steward on the earth, to fulfill the divine purpose. World dominion was granted to him. He was commissioned to subdue the earth.
The Last Adam, Jesus, is eternally sinless, immortal and is heaven’s representative on earth. He will subdue both heaven and earth. Philippians 2:10–11
Adam’s disobedience resulted in death for man, both spiritually and physically. Christ’s death resulted in everlasting life for those that repent and submit to him. Here’s the way Paul wrote it:
1 Corinthians 15:45,47,49
6. CROSS
God’s plan for redeeming humanity and creation was the Cross. Jesus Christ, the last Adam, freely offered himself as atonement for man’s sin and purchased eternal life for all who trust Him.
Romans 5:18-19
7. CONSUMMATION
God will renew His creation. Revelation 21:1-5
The Authority Genesis 1-11
If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?
Psalm 11:3 NKJV
